About

The Fiedo Lab, led by Jess G. Fiedorowicz, MD, PhD is based out of the Department of Mental Health at The Ottawa Hospital and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Our research program focuses on the morbidity and mortality in bipolar disorder, particularly as it relates to cardiovascular disease and suicide.

  • Sara Siddiqi Headshot

    Sara Siddiqi

    PhD CANDIDATE

    Sara Siddiqi is a PhD Candidate in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa and Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She is supervised by Dr. Jess Fiedorowicz and Dr. Ian Colman, and her research interests include investigating the relationship between mental disorders and cardiovascular disease risk. She hopes to work at the interface of medicine and research, conducting translational research. She is an avid EDI advocate, and outside of school she enjoys baking and finding hiking trails!

    Simone Rusu

    MEDICAL STUDENT

    Simone Rusu is a medical student at the University of Ottawa. She completed her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and molecular genetics at the University of Toronto. Her research currently focuses on investigating the correlation between various mood states in bipolar disorder and suicide risks.

    GRADUATE STUDENT

    Aria Wills is a graduate student studying Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa. She completed her HBSc in Human Biology and Psychology at the University of Toronto. Aria is passionate about understanding and improving the quality of life and care for marginalized and underserved populations, and she looks forward to continuing this pursuit with her thesis focused on the end of life for individuals with schizophrenia.

    Samuel Tiukuvaara

    GRADUATE STUDENT

    Samuel Tiukuvaara is a MSc Epidemiology student at the University of Ottawa researching how schizophrenia may impact the needs and outcomes of individuals living in long-term care homes. Outside of this, this Samuel is also an avid rock climber and enjoys cooking.

    CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

    Jessica Yu is a Clinical Research Assistant at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She recently completed her MSc in Experimental Medicine at McGill University which focused on the impact of sleep disturbances in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Jessica currently works on studies related to bipolar disorder.

    Joseph Burns

    CLINICAL RESEARCH COORDINATOR

    Joe Burns is a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Joe comes to the lab with expertise in gender equity, wellness, and global health. Joe has a keen interest in improving access to mental health care. He currently works on projects related treating bipolar disorder and implementing suicide prevention initiatives.

    CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

    Ella Blondin is a Clinical Research Assistant at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She has a background in mental health research and recently completed her bachelor's degree in psychology at Queen's University. Ella is passionate about mental health advocacy and increasing the accessibility of support resources. Outside of work she enjoys reading, creative writing, and running.
